Hosiery vs Cotton vs Modal Nighties: Which Fabric Should You Buy?

Walk through any nightwear listing and you will see the same three words over and over: cotton, hosiery, modal. They look similar in photos. They are not similar to wear. One stretches, one doesn't. One dries in an hour, one takes an afternoon. One fits three sizes, one fits exactly one.

If you have ever bought a nighty that looked right and felt wrong, the fabric was probably the reason. This guide explains the difference so you can choose on purpose.

Now the detail.

Cotton: the default, for good reason

Pure cotton is a woven fabric. It doesn't stretch, it breathes better than anything else on this list, and it absorbs sweat instead of holding it against you. That is why it is the fabric most women in India sleep in, and why it makes up most of our nightwear range.

What it feels like. Slightly crisp when new, then softer with every wash. On a humid night it feels cool because air passes straight through the weave.

Fit. Because cotton has no give, you must buy the right size. A cotton nighty that is two inches too small across the bust stays two inches too small. This is the single biggest reason cotton nighties get returned, so measure your bust and hips and check the listing. Most of our cotton nighties list the bust round and length in inches. If you are between sizes, go up — a loose cotton nighty is comfortable, a tight one is not.

Prints. Cotton takes print beautifully, which is why batik, bandhani and floral prints are almost always on cotton. Dark and busy prints also hide the everyday marks a nighty picks up.

Care. Machine wash in cold or warm water. Hot water shrinks pure cotton, especially in the first wash. Dry in shade — direct sun fades the print. It creases, so if you like a smooth look, iron on medium while it is slightly damp.

Choose cotton if you want the coolest option for hot weather, you have sensitive or allergy-prone skin, you know your size, or you want the biggest choice of prints and sizes. Our cotton range runs from L to 7XL.

Skip cotton if your size changes (pregnancy, post-delivery, weight in flux) or you want something that fits without checking a tape measure. Hosiery does that job better.

Hosiery: stretchy, light, forgiving

"Hosiery" is what Indian garment makers call a soft knitted fabric — the same family as a good T-shirt. Because it is knitted, not woven, it stretches in every direction and springs back. That changes everything about how a nighty fits.

What it feels like. Soft from the very first wear, lighter than cotton, and it moves with you instead of rustling. It clings slightly, so it feels closer to the body than a cotton nighty.

Fit. This is hosiery's big advantage. One nighty covers a range of sizes: our standard hosiery nighties fit roughly 34 to 40 inch bust, and the plus-size ones fit up to a 50 to 52 inch bust. If you are between sizes, or buying for someone whose size you're not sure of, hosiery is the safe choice. It also suits the months around delivery, when your body changes week to week — several of our hosiery styles have a front zip for that reason.

Heat. Hosiery is light and airy, which is why it sells hardest in summer. It doesn't absorb quite like cotton, so on a very sweaty night it can feel damp for a moment before it dries. It dries fast, though.

Care. This is where hosiery needs more attention than cotton. Wash in cold water with a mild detergent. Never wring it — squeeze gently and dry flat or on a hanger in shade. Do not tumble dry and do not iron on high heat; both damage the stretch. Treated well, a hosiery nighty keeps its shape for years. Treated roughly, it goes baggy at the neck and starts to pill.

Choose hosiery if you want a nighty that fits without measuring, you're buying a gift, your size is changing, or you want the lightest option for summer. It is also our most affordable fabric.

Skip hosiery if you dislike fabric that clings, or you know you'll throw it in a hot wash and wring it out.

Modal: the softest of the three

Modal is made from beech-wood cellulose, spun into a fibre that is smoother and finer than cotton. It is the fabric people mean when they say a nighty feels "like silk but breathable".

What it feels like. Cool, fluid and noticeably softer than either cotton or hosiery. It drapes rather than hangs, so a modal nighty looks more elegant on the body and feels lovely against the skin.

Fit. Modal has a little natural give — more than cotton, much less than hosiery. Buy your size; the drape does the rest. Our modal nighties come in 2XL to 4XL, most with lace detailing at the neck and a choice of front-zip or plain front.

Wear. Modal resists pilling, shrinking and fading better than cotton, and it wicks moisture, so it stays comfortable through a warm night. It does cost more than the other two.

Care. Gentle cycle, cold or lukewarm water, no bleach and no fabric softener (softener coats the fibre and dulls the feel). Dry in shade. It barely creases; if it needs ironing, use low heat.

Choose modal if you want the softest possible nighty, you're buying a gift you want to feel premium, or you've found cotton a bit rough on your skin.

Skip modal if you want the lowest price or the widest size range. For 5XL and above, cotton and hosiery are your options.

Which fabric for which situation

• Hot, humid summer nights: cotton first, hosiery a close second. Both breathe; cotton absorbs more, hosiery is lighter.
• Plus size, 3XL and above: cotton for the widest range (up to 7XL) and hosiery for a stretchy fit up to 52 inch bust. Modal stops at 4XL.

• Sensitive skin: pure cotton or modal. Both are gentle; cotton is the safer bet if you react to blends.
• Gifting when you don't know her size: hosiery. One size covers a range, and it feels soft straight out of the packet.
• A nighty that will last years: cotton or modal, washed properly. Hosiery lasts too, but only if you never wring or tumble-dry it.
• Cold winter nights: none of these is warm on its own. Layer a cotton nighty under a shawl, or look at our fleece and velvet winter styles instead.

How to tell what you're getting

Listings don't always say. A few checks that work:

1. "Pure cotton" or "100% cotton" means woven cotton. "Cotton feel", "cotton blend" or "soft fabric" usually means hosiery or a mix.
2. If the listing gives a size range ("free size, L to XXL") rather than one size, it is almost certainly hosiery — woven cotton can't fit three sizes.
3. Stretch test at home. Pull the fabric gently sideways. Cotton won't move. Hosiery stretches easily and snaps back. Modal gives a little.
4. Lace and a drape in the photo usually points to modal; batik, bandhani and bold prints usually point to cotton.
